Social Season Style

Social Season Style

The British summer social season has kicked off and with it the dilemma of what to wear to these summer events. Each occasion has its own dress code which makes summer dressing even more challenging. Fear not – you are sorted! Here is our guide to summer clothing for the social season.

Summer racing is all about the horses, but fashion is hot on their hooves, especially at Royal Ascot. At many race meetings you will be on the right track if you aim for ‘elegant’. Hats may not be required but a sophisticated handbag to hold the essentials, a good pair of shades, a coordinating jacket and smart footwear will tick the box.

The Steward’s Enclosure is the place to be but also where the dress code is most stringent. Hemlines must be below the knee and comfortable shoes a must. Those stilettos will sink into the riverbanks, so we suggest opting for chunky platform sandals. Take a roomy bag for a little knit in case its chilly or a brolly should rain be a threat. Remember: no denim, no trainers, no sportswear and no high hemlines!

Generally, polo spectators will be seen in a summer outfit of jeans, shirts and comfy shoes. For the gentleman, this might be well cut blue denim or white and a nice shirt paired with a suede boot. For the ladies opt for jeans, a blazer and a pretty shirt with sensible shoes for stomping the diverts.

The larger matches attract celebrities, the royals and the great and good of the polo world. There is no specific dress code in place but aim for classic with a twist and be mindful that most women will be wearing a dress. This maybe floaty, spotty, subtle or colourful – the choice is yours.

The world’s oldest tennis championship has no official dress code but smart dress is encouraged. Whilst those on court are restricted to all white, those courtside can flaunt the entire rainbow of colour. As always, be prepared for all weathers with a hat, sunglasses, a jacket and maybe a waterproof.

Selecting a summer outfit for Glastonbury has no boundaries. It might be wise to opt for floaty silks or linens in case it’s a scorcher but the vibe to aim for is relaxed, expressive and fun. Wellies are key teamed with skirts or shorts with comfy trainers for non-stop dancing should it be dry underfoot.

The Grand Prix can be a more casual affair depending on your ticket. If you are being entertained, you may need to up the ante in your choice of summer clothing. If not keep it casual but stylish and chic. A funky hat if it’s a hot sunny day, some cool sunglasses or a striking cashmere jumper will nudge your summer outfit in to pole position.

Step into the social season with confidence in your summer clothes and have fun!
